Backhoe Safety

Backhoes are one of the most common types of construction equipment found today. And rightly so as their versatility and maneuverability makes the back hoe the equipment of choice for most construction jobs. Workers have been seriously injured and even killed working around the rear of the machine, and not using proper techniques entering and exiting machines. Follow the below guidelines:

  • Never start the backhoe from any position other than from the driver's seat... Never when you're on the ground. Older machines could have stuck controls which can suddenly become unstuck when started.
  • Use the handrail or steps when mounting the machine, three points of contact at all times. Never mount or dismount on the rear of the machine between the swing boom and the rear stabilizer.
  • Don't use the controls as handholds.
  • Always use the swing pin and boom and loader lift cylinder locks.
  • Always chock wheels, even when implements are grounded.
