And in the Best "Picture worth a thousand words" category, the nominee is...
Leaving oily rags on welding equipment is extremely dangerous. Oil on regulators can get inside joints, etc. and cause major problems (like deterioration of gaskets for instance). Whether it is the oxygen, acetylene or any other gas, the "safe work practice" is to not store oily rags on or near gas cylinders. The pictures show a good example of what not to do. Oil residue on the face of the regulator can be seen in the right hand picture.
Good Reminders of What To Do:
- ALWAYS check the equipment for proper working order before conducting cutting/welding operations.
- ALWAYS check that the valves are closed at the torch before turning on the cylinder regulator valves.
- ALWAYS check the equipment to be used for signs of wear or damage; listen for leaks.
- ALWAYS conduct work area examinations prior to welding.
- ALWAYS provide good ventilation to the work space.
- ALWAYS wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment.
- ALWAYS light the torch away from your body.
- ALWAYS Keep oil and grease from hoses, cylinders, regulator and all fittings connected to oxygen. (Peterson Safety Rule).
